Dear Irwin,

I love playing video games, but my parents are always telling me they will damage my brain. I actually think they can help make us smarter. Which one of us is right?

Signed, Gamer Guy

Dear Gamer Guy,

New studies have shown that spending some down time with a game console actually helps train your brain. After three decades of research, specialists have finally discovered that video games have impacts beyond the stereotypical anger and violence. Your parents are not alone, many worry when their child becomes engaged in hours of playing video games; maybe they’ll reconsider after this new study. Specialists have found that by playing video games, you can gain many skills that you can use in your everyday routines. Some games, for instance, help medical students practice surgery. Other games have been shown to improve visual accuracy and hand-eye coordination in pilots.

In the end both, you and your parents may both be right; studies show video games could be helpful for the players if the time is limited. Some skills such as reaction time, attention to detail, and situational awareness could be improved by your game time. Spending too much time on them, though, could keep you from developing other necessary skills, so be sure to keep a balance!
