Despite the beauty of the unique island located 90 miles off the southern tip of Florida, few post-revolution Cubans believed they would ever regain their status as a tourist destination. Over the past few years, however, that is just what has been happening and, now, with relations between the United States and Cuba improving, these trips are expected to increase dramatically. At PPMH, many Crocs have already visited, but most did so to see their families.

Eighth-grader Kloe Jimenez is one of the ones who has gone to Cuba to visit her family. She explains that “the experience of visiting Cuba and seeing how different everything was and what family members and friends there go through has made me appreciate my lifestyle here more.” Although she loved seeing her family again after so many years, she described the surreal experience of feeling like she “took a time machine and traveled back to the past,” with people walking or riding bikes everywhere. She described being treated “a little like royalty” while she stayed in her grandparents’ house in Havana.

Fellow Croc, Claudia Marrero has had similar experiences and describes her favorite part of Cuba visits as playing outside with all the kids from the neighborhood. She visits her sister’s house in Santa Clara each summer and she has noticed how Cubans on the island seem much more resourceful and how they have learned to not throw anything away: “even when something breaks, they always find a way to fix it or use it in a different way.”

It seems that most Crocs who visit Cuba return with a greater appreciation for their lifestyle here, but also a greater appreciation for the unique, traditional culture of the islanders.
